Fairfax is an independent city located approximately 20 miles west of Washington D.C. The City of Fairfax should not be confused with Fairfax County, which is a much larger area that encompasses several cities, towns, and census-designated places.
Downtown Fairfax is located just a short drive from I-66. The commute from Fairfax to Washington D.C. by car ranges from 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the traffic. Like many other parts of the D.C. metro area, Fairfax experiences very heavy traffic during morning and evening rush hours.
Fairfax’s central location also makes it easy to commute to many other parts of northern Virginia. It is about 30 minutes away from Dulles International Airport and 45 minutes away from Quantico. Fairfax is also just a five-minute drive from George Mason University, and many GMU students and professors live in the area.
There are also public transit options nearby. The nearest Metro stop to Fairfax is in Vienna, which is a 10-minute drive from downtown Fairfax. Local bus routes run from Fairfax to Vienna as well. There is also a commuter rail and Amtrak stop located a 10-minute drive from Fairfax in the opposite direction.

Nearby George Mason University hosts a variety of athletic and performing arts events throughout the year.
